While the world focuses on France, thousands march in Bilbo to challenge Spanish fascism

Posted on Thursday, May 17, 2002

According the organisers 40,000 backed the march under the "Faxismoari stop. Demokrazia euskal herriarentzat " – “Stop fascism, democracy for the basque Country” slogan. The demo was called against the continuos attempts by the Spanish government to ban any group related to the Basque separatism and obviously the main political force Batasuna (former Euskal Herritarrok, former Herri Batasuna).

In this way the Spanish government has banned groups as the social ones Zumalabe, the youth organization Haika, the prisoner support group Gestoras Pro-Amnistia, the party Herri Batasuna and Euskal Herritarrok and the publications Egin, Ardibeltza and raided many other groups’ offices. The organizers, Batasuna itself, compared both main Spanish parties PP (Partido Popular) and PSOE (former party in government, Socialist) with other fascists around Europe and the world, for using such measures to get rid of opposition and the desires of independence in Euskal Herria.

Batasuna spokesperson Arnaldo Otegi stated at the end of the demo that Euskal Herria has faced all the known political systems (questionable…): monarchy, dictatorship, republic, democracy and fascism dressed as ‘democracy’. And according to him, in all these situations Basques have managed to resist and keep on the fight for their rights. He remind that those ones on power now trying to ban Batasuna are the same ones who were part of Franco’s government: Fraga Iribarne, the Oreja, the Martín Villa, etc. They are the ones who in this so-called ‘democracy’ torture Basque citizens no matter if they are not involved in any organization to pretend they have things under control.

He stated that the Basque left doesn’t belong to a party but to a feeling and that they’ll manage to ilegalize the party but will not be able to destroy that feeling and that people.
The Spanish government has been trying to implement the party illegalization for long time and has tried to take advantages (as everywhere else) of the new anti-terrorist crusade led by the U$ to get backing from the European and the International community.
