Land, Peace, And A State For Palestine

Posted on Thursday, May 2 , 2002

Basque singer Fremin Muguruza and Paul Nicholson from the Basque farmers union EHNE and Via Campesina were visiting Palestine and Arafat on a delegation.
This was their communiqué:

Resisting oppression and occupation is a right and a duty, recognised internationally.

Land, Peace, And A State For Palestine

With our own eyes, we are witnessing war crimes. Unrestricted bombing, indiscriminate executions, thousands of people wounded and arrested, incredible indictments, journalists and witnesses threatened, all ambulances shot at, mains and water supply services destroyed, lands, crops, buildings, homes devastated. The most cruel genocide, which the State of Israel, with one of the most powerful armies in the world, is conducting against the poor people of Palestine.

And seeing what is happening here, how can we look away, how can we not share the
burden of such cruelty? We feel committed, involved, and so have decided to stay
here and participate in the civil campaign against this monumental injustice. Our task will be to demand a just peace:

  1. Denouncing all bombardment and attack, demanding a cease-fire and the immediate withdrawal of the Israeli army from occupied Palestinian territory.

  2. Proclamation of a sovereign, independent Palestinian state.

  3. Recognition of the National Authority of Palestine as the only legitimate representative of the Palestinian people
Immediate renewal of Peace and Security Talks for the area.

  4. Immediate application of and compliance with UN resolutions.

  5. An International Peace-keeping Mission to be sent urgently by
    the UN.

And given the obvious weakness and failure of our politicians to do anything, street demonstrations must continue. Only by showing our drive and strength can we pressure our governments to take true action. We must demonstrate against Israel, appear before their institutions and consulates with our demands, until all the Palestinian territories are freed of occupation.

For our part, and due to the commitment we feel, we will continue here until we see that the just claims of the Palestinian people are on the way to being solved. We encourage everyone to come to Palestine to show their solidarity with these people and to help to change this situation.
Congratulations on the demonstration and keep up the good work on behalf of justice and fair play.

Globalising The Struggle Is To Globalise Hope.

From Ramallah, on behalf of the civil movement present here.

Paul Nicholson
