Friday, 26 July, 2002 The activity against the high Speed
train has increased both in the French and Spanish side of
Basque Country.
After a bike march through both sides of the Basque country,
the main activity of the Assembly Against the High Speed Train
is a camp in one of the affected areas is now. This camp will
be the 7th one of its kind.

On Friday 12th July, the Basque regional Parliament approved
to discuss self-government next September. The decision
counted with the backing of the three parties in the Basque
regional government the Basque nationalist PNV (Basque nationalist
Party), EA (Basque Union) and the leftist IU (United Left).

is pushing hard to illegalize the Basque separatist parties
and in this case the main institutional party Batasuna (known
before as Herri batasuna and Euskal Herritarrok).

To understand the Basque Conflict:
some historic notes.
A nationalist conflict cannot be understood unless it is
put into context. In the Basque case this context goes back
to ancient times, as a millenarian culture fighting against
various invasions and oppressions: the Romans, the Visigoths,
the Moors, the Francs until the remaining occupation by
the kingdom of Spain and France (currently Republic).

The Zumalabe 5 free at last
The five remaining imprisoned Joxemi Zumalabe activists Iñaki
O'Shea, Carlos Trenor, Mikel Zuluaga, Mikel Aznar and Sabino
Ormazabal were also released on 18th May after payment of
£2,000 fines. The 5 had being acused of belonging to
a terrorist organization for their involvement with the Joxemi
Zumalabe Foundation.

Benjamín Ramos was finally released on the 24th June
after dilating
Activist have been campaigning for years for the release
of this miscarriage of justice who was dying in prison because
of AIDS. However despite his innocence and his health condition
and short live expectations, the authorities dilated his
release.
