Embargo against Batasuna

Friday, 12 July, 2002

As many of you already know from past mails and in the news in this web-page (Euskalinfo.org.uk), the Spanish government is pushing hard to illegalize the Basque separatist parties and in this case the main institutional party Batasuna (known before as Herri batasuna and Euskal Herritarrok).

The Spanish government is passing with this purpose the so-called Parties Law. However, that sinister character Judge Garzón who so-may offices, group, newspapers, etc. has closed down and who has put so many people belonging to this initiatives in prison wanted to have a go in the dismantling of the Basque separatist left.

In this case he decided to press charges for the damages caused in the endless riots in the Basque Country – the so-called Kale Borroka or Street Struggle. The fine is the equivalent to the costs of these damages.

Therefore Judge Garzón has gone ahead with his diabolic plan of seizing all the bank accounts (109) belonging to this political party and premises (74) including offices, meeting rooms and social centres (Herrikoak = pubs) and even an allotment plot Garzón makes the party Batasuna responsible for damages of a total of 24,3 million Euros (£15m). This is based in a report by the Spanish Police UCI (Intelligence Central Unit). At the same time Garzón orders the police to immobilise Batasuna’s assets.
