Euskal Herria already has its Indymedia

Tuesday, 9 July, 2002

Indymedia has got to the Basque Country. The new Euskal Herria Indymedia is already a reality after months and loads of effort. From Euskalinfo we want to welcome this new alternative source of information in Euskal Herria that has already been proved to be such an important communication tool elsewhere. ONGI ETORRI Euskal Herrira Indymedia.

Information in the Basque Country counts already with an important independent media to join to all those radios, fanzines, etc. Media in Basque Country counts with institutional press and with other press, which is independent too but strongly related to the separatist movement.
This latest one includes papers as GARA, Egunkaria (extrictly in Euskera (Basque) or magazines like Kalegorria. All of them like everything in the orbit of the Basque separatist movement has suffered huge repression. Basque Indymedia has been born trying to be independent from these two main blocks if such a thing is possible in the Basque Country.

Its content is integrally in Basque , which is also something to be much appreciated, and it also provides versions in Spanish and French the other two languages spoken in this country regarding the area and the governments in control. Basque Indymedia is as any other Indymedias, part of the wider International network of Indymedia.
Indymedia has accomplished a lot since the Seattle IMC was born in November 1999. This international network with more than 40 IMCs around the world includes now the new Basque one Euskal Herria Indymedia. Indymedia is a sustainable and independent organisation on a local level. Indymedia provide people with the possibilities of running their own media by submitting their own stories. This is related to the real identity of Indymedia, which is based in an alternative information without profitable purposes and from and for people.

One of the other identity features of Indymedia is its position against globalization, or as Euskal herria Indymedia points out “we’re into other kind of globalization”, against the borders, on behalf of solidarity, against the corporations, on behalf of resistance. And therefore those ones behind this project come from the activist scene.

As well as the local Indymedias there is a global Indymedia which can be found at www.indymedia.org .

This is run with contributions from the local Indymedia and with meetings held on the web.
